Customized LMS for Employee Training

Prince William County, Virginia

Background

Prince William County is one of the leading technology users among county governments and has aggressively developed Internet applications for all areas of county business. However, in this period of rapid technological change, its e-learning system had become obsolete. The county wanted to expand the computer courses it offered employees and needed to increase the level of control that county training administrators had over e-learning.

The Solution

County officials chose Fulcrum to provide an online learning management system (LMS) to train county employees in how to use a variety of computer applications and the Windows operating system. The system is intended for county employees across the county, accommodating several skill levels.

Fulcrum partnered with NETg, one of the industry's leading courseware content vendors, to incorporate its e-learning courseware and the administrative software to run a new training program. NETg provided both its courseware and a simple LMS that served as the basis of the project. Fulcrum wrote customer software to significantly enhance this LMS and integrate it seamlessly with Prince William County's intranet.

The Results

The system implemented by Fulcrum permits County officials to administer training more easily and efficiently through better tracking of student enrollment and progress in the courses, easier access and registration for students, and the ability to set minimum performance standards. County officials also believe the courseware will teach county employees more effectively than the courseware they have used in the past.

The system replaces an outmoded e-learning system and is built to scale up and add new courses more easily. NETg provides one of the biggest libraries of courseware in the e-learning industry. The system also gives county officials the ability to create their own custom courses.
